PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DADA

TIME FRAME

  • Dada or Dadaism was an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century. Dada in Zürich, Switzerland, began in 1916 at Cabaret Voltaire, spreading to Berlin shortly thereafter, but the height of New York Dada was the year before, in 1915.

MARCEL DUCHAMP

Having experienced with Cubism and Futurism, whose joint influence may be felt in his early paintings, he paved the way for the American Dada movement together with his friends and collaborators Picabia and Man Ray. By challenging the very notion of what is art, his first readymades sent shock waves across the art world that can still be felt today.

THE FOUNTAIN
Fountain is one of a group objects that Duchamp called "readymades," works with which he challenged traditional notions of making and exhibiting art. Anonymously defending the work in the press, Duchamp claimed he had "created a new thought for that object." He rejected the assumption that art must be linked to the craft of the hand and instead argued that a work of art should be primarily about the artist's idea

THE TREACHERY OF IMAGES
"The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it!And, yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it is just a representation is it not? So if I had written on my picture 'This is a pipe' I'd have been lying!"-Rene Magritte

I am interested in the Dada art movement because it deviates from the norm of art, and it is rebellious. I like that Dada art reminds us not to take everything so seriously, and I think it's a good reminder in the art world as well.

My ceramic piece relates to Dada art because it is a painting of Picasso on a television with a polka dot shirt. Picasso always wore striped shirts so it's kind of a cute joke. Also the tv and Picasso have no relation I just put two random things together, which goes with Duchamp's readymade pieces.
