COLD WAR

Superpower: A very powerful nation.

United Nations: An organization that launched internationally to keep security, cooperation, and peace between other nations.

Iron Curtain: Fictional barrier separating Western and Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

Containment: Attempting to restricting the spread of communism and the Soviet Union.

Marshall Plan: US plan to provide aid for Europe after World War II.

NATO: A defense pact created by Western nation during 1949.

Warsaw Pact: Involved Eastern Europe and the USSR And was a defense pact.

Arms Race: A race to see who can get weapon superiority.

Cultural Revolution: China political persecution from 1966-1976.

Korea War: Started 1950 and ended 1953 between North and South Korea. The USSR and China helped North Korea while U.S. Helped South Korea.

Viet Cong: South Vietnam insurgents who supported communism.

Vietnam War: The war between North Korea and South Korea from 1950s to 1975.

Domino Theory: Belief that communism would reach the rest of Asia if Vietnam fell.

Covert Action: Secret Economic, political, or military mission fueled by the government to help foreign nations.

Détente: Cold War tensions between West & East reducing in the 1970s.

Deterrence: Building a weapon that will scare other nation not into attacking you.

The Cold War caused future distrust with other countries that pledged support to the Soviet Union. The Cold War sent Eastern Europe spiraling in to poverty and they're still trying to recover. Also the nations that allied themselves with the Soviet Union have made themselves partial enemies to the U.S. The Cold War led to furthering the technological advancements of humankind.
