Key Terms

  • Absolution: An essential element of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in which the Priest, by the power entrusted to the Church by Christ, pardons the sin(s) of the penitent.
  • Contribution: An essential element of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which consists of sorrow for the sin committed, together with afire resolution not to sin again.
  • Perfect Contribution: Sorrow for our sins that result from God's Pure Love for us & our Love for God above all else.
  • Seal of Confession: The obligation of the Priest hearing confessions to never reveal what anyone has confessed; also called the Sacrament Seal.

Reconciliation

  • 3 acts of Penitent: Contribution, Confession, and Penance
  • Mortal Sins must be confessed in kind & number.
  • The number refers to how often the Mortal Sin is committed.
  • Kind refers to the nature & seriousness of the sin.

1st Essential Element

  • Absolution: Gives God's Grace to the penitent.
  • Perfect Contrition: Sorrow that comes from God's Pure Love & Our love for God above all else.
  • Imperfect Contrition: A fear of Consequences of Sin, including the fear of Eternal Punishment in Hell for Unforgiven Mortal Sins.
