CLUB DRUGS

GHB

  • Known as the "date rape" drug
  • Stands for Gamma Hydroxybutyrate
  • Formula: C4 H8 O3
  • Central nervous system (CNS) depressant
  • Alternative names: Liquid X, Georgia home boy, Oop, and Mils
  • Often placed in alcohol

GHB SIDE EFFECTS

  • Good side effects: euphoria, tranquility and increased sex drive
  • Bad side effects: sweating, loss of consciousness, nausea, hallucinations, amnesia and/or a coma
  • Withdrawal Side Effects: insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and sweating

GHB TREAMENT

  • Prescription options include diazepam or lorazepam
  • Withdrawal treatments include benzodiazepines or alcohol
  • Baclofen had been reported as a possible treatment for withdrawal
  • However, this treatment is not FDA approved

MDMA

  • Also known as Ecstacy or Molly
  • Short for methylenedioxy-methamphetamine
  • Taken as a tablet or capsule
  • Increases activity of the brain neurotransmitters
  • Formula: C11 H15 NO2

MDMA SIDE EFFECTS

  • Bad side effects: anxiety, side effects, irritability, sadness, impulsiveness, aggression, sleep disturbances, lack of appetite, and thirst
  • Health effects: nausea, chills, sweating, muscle cramping, blurred vision, dehydration, high blood pressure, heart failure, and kidney failure
  • Symptoms: faintness, panic attacks, loss of consciousness, and seizures

MDMA TREATMENT

  • Prehospital care provides: administered oxygen, controlling blood glucose levels, and frequently checking consciousness
  • Emergency department provides: undressing the patient, applying cooling with water and fan, applying ice packs to the axilla and groin, and controlling shivering with benzodiazepine

KETAMINE

  • Used for anesthesia before surgery
  • Administered as an injection at a doctors office, clinic, of hospital
  • May cause drowsiness for up to 24 hours
  • May cause behavior, mental, or mood changes , confusion or hallucinations that often go away within 24 hours
  • Formula: C13 H16 CINO

KETAMINE SIDE EFFECTS

  • Common side effects: loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting
  • Severe side effects: behavior changes, confusion, difficult or painful urination, double vision, fainting, and irregular heartbeat
  • Other side effects: hallucinations, involuntary muscle movements, pain, redness or swelling at injection, dizziness, light-headed ness, slowed breathing, and uncontrolled eye movements

KETAMINE TREAMENT OPTIONS

  • Therapy options: individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, hypnotherapy and recreation therapy
  • Other treatments include outpatient care, support groups, and intensive outpatient programs

ROHYPNOL

  • Generic Name: flunitrazepam
  • Other names: forget me drug, roches, roofies, wolfies, lunch money drug, and ruffles
  • Intermediate-acting benzodiazepine
  • Used in short-term treatment of insomnia
  • Used illegally as an anti-depressant and as an aid for sexual assault
  • Formula: C16 H12 FN3 O3

ROHYPNOL SIDE EFFECTS

  • Sedative Effects: drowsiness, confusion, impaired motor skills, dizziness, disorientation, disinhibition, impaired judgement, bad reduced levels of consciousness
  • Effects when mixed with alcohol or other drugs: low blood pressure, respiratory depression, coma, difficulty breathing, and even death

ROHYPNOL TREATMENT

  • Inpatient Treatment: detoxification and counseling; may take months
  • Outpatient Treatment: individual therapy, group counseling and group meetings
  • Another treatment includes dual diagnosis, which is used for those with a mood disorder due to drugs
