Who Founded Delaware?

Henry Hudson and Captain Samuel Argall. 

Henry Hudson sailed into Delaware Bay when looking for the Northwest Passage. He then went back and told the Dutch that the land was filled with forests.

A sea captain named Samuel Argall was blown off course by a storm and landed in the same bay. He named it De La Warr after the governor of Virginia.

Who settled in Delaware?

The Dutch Calvinists, Swedish Lutherans, and English Protestants 

The Dutch landed there in 1631 but after a dispute with the Lenape natives, the settlement was lost

In 1637, Peter Minuit brought some Swedish to Delaware to settle.

The Dutch and the Swedish fought a lot over the colony, but eventually, it was taken over by the English

Who were some important people that lived in Delaware?

Henry Hudson was a sailor who sailed for the English and Dutch

Peter Minuit was the governor of New Amsterdam and then worked for the Swedish. He bought Manhattan for $24 worth of goods in today’s money

Johan Printz was the first governor of New Sweden who was born in Sweden. He built several forts and changed the capital of New Sweden from Fort Christina to New Gothenburg

William Penn was the founder of Pennsylvania but also claimed Delaware in 1681

What were some important events in Delawares history?

Important Events in Delaware

  • 1609: Hudson sailed into Delaware Bay and claimed the land for the Dutch
  • 1681: William Penn claimed Delaware Colony.
  • 1701: Delaware became independent from Pennsylvania's rule.
  • 1754: The French and Indian War begins

What crops or goods were produced or exported?

Crops and Exports

  • Exported tobacco grown in Virginia
  • Furs, fish, and timber
  • Indigo
  • Wheat, rice, and other grains

What makes Delaware special, different, and unique?

Many Dutch cultures were brought to the colony because they had settled there.
Donuts, ice skating, sleds,
split doors, and dikes were all brought and made by the Dutch.
