INDIAN BUDDHA

CHINESE BUDDHA

  • Chinese buddha is heavier than Indian Buddha because in china, when you are heavy it symbolizes rich.
  • Chinese buddha is bald, unlike Indian Buddha.
  • Chinese Buddha had long, drooping earlobes.
  • Chinese Buddha is usually smiling, unlike Indian Buddha.
  • Chinese Buddha is not graceul like Indian Buddha.

INDIAN BUDDHA

  • Indian buddha is skinny, and has hair
  • Indian buddha has many different poses in his statues
  • He wears a robe, that usually always only goes over one shoulder, and goes down to his ankles.
  • He wearsdthe same headpiece in every statue and picture.
  • Every buddha pose has a different meaning.

PROTECTION BUDDHA/OVERCOMING FEAR

FACTS:

  • Protection Buddha has his palm up, symbolizing a shield for protection.
  • He is sitting down, with his robe slung around him.
  • This Buddha symbolizes courage and protection

MEDITATION BUDDHA / SERENITY BUDDHA / CALMING BUDDHA

  • This statue is for people who need calmness and peace in their lives.
  • The statue is shaped in a somewhat traingle which represents stability.
  • Many large statues in Japan and Korea are in this meditation pose.
  • Both hands are in his lap, his palms facing up, and he is sitting in lotus position.
  • This pose is called the Amithabha Buddha, translated means Boundless Light.

ENLIGHTENMENT BUDDHA

  • Enlightenment buddha is commonly found in Thai worship temples.
  • This Buddha pose and statue is the representation of when Buddha was enlightened.
  • During Buddha's enlightenment process he meditated for nights on end and this is a symbol of his hard work.
  • This statue is very colorful and is meant to be happy.
  • Buddha still has the same facial features and physical features.

NIRVANA BUDDHA/RECLINING BUDDH

  • This Buddha is a representation of Buddha right before he entered Nirvana.
  • moksha is the liberation from the cycle of birth and death, and once someone has achieved moksha they reach Nirvana
  • One famous example of this Buddha is in Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Buddha is always lying down for this pose.

TEACHING BUDDHA

  • This statue symbolizes wisdom, understanding, and fulfilling destiny.
  • His hands are at his chest with his index and thumb forming a circle.
  • This statue is used when people are studying Buddha and his life.

MEDICINE BUDDHA

  • Medicine Buddha is painted as blue in art, but it doesn't change the Buddha no matter what color.
  • The medicine Buddha statue is seeked by those who are ill and need health.
  • They are in most temples.
  • He is in the lotus position with his right hand facing down with his fingers towards the ground.
  • His left hand has a bowl of medicinal herbs .
