Included in this analysis of learners is Bloom’s and Gardner’s theories of learning. As a classroom teacher, we need to teach the edges, not just the averages. Every student can improve their academic success if given the opportunity. We just need to be creative and think outside the box.
The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner. Gardner believed that traditional I.Q. Testing limits teachers and learners. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes that we have eight different intelligences. We are limiting human potential if we believe children have one strength. Dr. Gardner encourages teachers to teach the edges. If we focus solely on math and English we are doing our children a disservice. There are other ways to learn and other ways to increase academic success by correlating subject matter in multiple ways.
GARDNER’S MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
Bloom’s Taxonomy is a hierarchical ordering of cognitive skills that can help teachers teach and students learn. It is used to create assessments, design curriculum, and plan project based learning.
