A little Background...

  • Francisco Vasquez de Cornado
  • Governor of Nueva Galicia 
  • Searched for the Seven Cities of Gold
  • City was told by a man named Marcos de Niza
  • Set out on his expedition on feburary 23, 1540

Coronado

His Journey

  • Found the first city, but indians lived there...
  • War! While at war with the indians Cornado was wounded. 
  • Successfully Defeated the indians, but stayed at the city to heal.
  • Coronado sent scouts out to find the second city.
  • That is when his scouts found the Grand Canyon!

Exploring a Unknown Land

  • Coronado never found the second city
  • searched, and searched... 
  • Winter of 1442
  • He spent the rest of his time Exploring the rest of the territory.  
  • Coronado ran into many indians, this meant more battles.

Returning to Spain.

  • Left Mexico in April 1542
  • Expedition was a failure!
  • Coronado was bankrupt.
  • Charges of War Crimes were brought against him.
  • Remained in Mexico, till he died on Sep. 22, 1554

Timeline

  • 1530- Coronado heard of the Seven Cities.
  • 1540- Coronado Headed to Mexico. 
  • 1541- Grand Canyon is found . 
  • 1542- Coronado heads home.
  • 1554- Coronado Dies from a disease.
