POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Post traumatic stress disorder is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened.
Some common symptoms that people with PTSD experience are flashbacks, physical aches and pains, substance abuse, anger and irritability, depression, hopelessness, poor memory, difficulties concentrating, and difficulties sleeping.
Some possible causes of PTSD are sudden death of a loved one, rape, childhood neglect, assault, car accident, and natural disasters.
Some treatment for PTSD are sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil).
PTSD is relevant to the US because it may cause sleeplessness,panic attacks, intense fear, nightmares, self-destructive thoughts or actions and depression.
Statistics
An estimated 7.8% of Americans will experience PTSD. Women have a 10.4% chance twice as likely as men (5%). About 3.6% of Us adults aged 18-54 (5.2 million people) have PTSD during a year.
