The First Crusade

Once upon a time, in 1095, a group of Arabs took control over Jerusalem and made the Jews and Christians go away.

So, Pope Urban ll called for a crusade which is when people volunteer to fight in the army.
A lot of people volunteered. This was the time of knights in shining armor. They enjoyed using their fighting skills.
For the poor people, this was a chance to escape their boring life in the government.
The pope promised that if the people died fighting a holy crusade, they would go to heaven.

The sign of the crusade was the red cross. Each crusader had one stitched onto their shirts and armor.
As a result, the army appeared to be unified. It reminded them that they were fighting a holy cause. The red cross was also added to flags banners.
After two years of hard traveling, being hungry, getting diseases, cold weather, and fighting among themselves, the crusaders finally made it to Jerusalem.
For two months the crusaders surrounded Jerusalem and cut off supplies to the city. Finally the city fell and the crusaders had control of Jerusalem again.
Some of the men stayed in Jerusalem. The men who went home brought back new foods and new forms of culture.
