The getting and losing of Billy's dogs. In chapter 5 Billy receives his dogs and it helps him grow up.

Over time Billy's dogs help him mature by taking him on a adventure to manhood.

The dogs help Billy learn to have responsibility and to overcome challenges.

In chapter 19 Billy loses his dogs. This helps him mature by excepting that his dogs are dead.

How people consider

Billy a man.

The winning of the gold and silver cup and the money help people view Billy as a man.

When Billy and his 2 dogs head to the championship hunt, people viewed him as a little kid.

Everybody thought Billy was a man, because the men that entered lost to a kid.

What makes Billy

a "boy" at the end of the story.

The way how Billy reacts and shows sympathy to both of his dogs dying.

Billy, during the mountain lion fight was a man fighting with his dogs.

When Old Dan and Little Ann dies, he cries and shows a lot of sympathy for his dogs.

How Billy changed

from the beginning of the story.

Billy changes because once he gets his dogs he learns to take responsibility and be mature.

In the beginning he shows determination to get his dogs. In the end he shows more determination when his dogs get lost in the snowstorm.
