THE VICTIMS OF THE WAR

  • 12 years long
  • children were often used as soldiers
  • civilians were targeted by death squads
  • 75,000 people died
  • to this day it is unknown how many "disappeared"

THE JESUIT MASSACRE

  • November 16, 1989
  • 6 Jesuit priest were murdered by armed forces
  • their cook and her daughter were also killed
  • Celina, the daughter, was 15

THE MURDER OF 4 CHRUCHWOMEN

  • December 2, 1980
  • raped and killed by national guard
  • their bodies were left in shallow graves on the side of the road
  • El Salvador claimed they were victims of a robbery
  • the U.S. turned a blind eye

OSCAR ROMERO MASSACRE

RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE

  • guerrilla warfare led to many civilians deaths
  • methods of death included: mutilation, torture, extrajudicial killing, and rape
  • many people were forced to disappear
  • these peoples deaths were considered "collateral damage"

EL SALVADOR CIVIL WAR

  • too often we forget that these are people not numbers
  • "The world will remain as brutal as our level of desensitization to its brutality."
