The Increasing Impact of Terrorism
- BOTH developed and developing nations deal with problems resulting from inequalities in their social, cultural, and economic systems
- Some individuals resort to terrorism to deal with these unequal conditions
- Terrorism: the use of violence and threats to intimidate and coerce for political reasons
September 11th, 2001
- 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda
- Hijacked four airliners
- Two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center, New York City
- One plane hit the Pentagon just outside of Washington, DC
- A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania
Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

The USA Patriot Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush in October 2011. It allowed roving wiretaps, searches of business records, surveillance of "lone wolves" and mass phone data collection.
Increased Security and Airports
CRIMINAL or PATRIOT? In 2013, former CIA contractor, Edward Snowden, copied and leaked classified information from the NSA without authorization. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs, with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments.
How much of our freedom are we willing to give up in order to be safe? How much privacy are we entitled to?
