GREAT COMPROMISE

THE VIRGINIA PLAN...

  • Was suggested by Virginian Edmund Randolph.
  • Focused power to the central government.
  • Had a bicameral legislature, made up of two houses.
  • Both house's number of representatives based on state population.

THE NEW JERSEY PLAN...

  • Was proposed by William Patterson.
  • Gave power to the states.
  • Had a unicameral legislature.
  • Gave equal power to each state no matter the size by having a equal number of representatives from every state.

THE GREAT COMPROMISE

  • Bicameral legislature (Virginia Plan)
  • In the lower house, number of representatives were based on state population. (Virginia Plan)
  • In the upper house, the number of representatives were equal. (New Jersey Plan)
  • Is also known as the Sherman Plan or the Connecticut Plan.
