HERMOPOLIS

GEOGRAPHY

  • Ancient Egyptians lived along a very narrow band of land that was made fertile by the Nile River's yearly flooding.
  • Ancient Egyptians unified neighboring villages into districts called nomes.
  • Each nome had a standard, and a portable sign that included an image of nome deity or a symbol of religious power.

GOVERNMENT

  • There were 5 ranks/classes
  • They were Noble (First Rank), Administrator (Second rank), Scribe (Third rank), Artisan (Fourth Rank), and Laborers or farmers (fifth rank).
  • They were ruled by a pharaoh named Akhenaten

WORSHIP (gODS)

  • The people of Hermopolis worshiped Thoth, the God of wisdom, scribes, and the upholder of justice.
  • Thoth (Pronounced Toth) is often shown holding papyrus and a reed pen to record judgements.

FUN FACTS

  • Thoth's sacred animals were the ibis and the baboon.
  • Nomes had carefully marked boundaries with records kept of their amount of farmland and their canals with all their branches.
