INDENTURED SERVITUDE

  • Lasted up until the 19th century
  • People traveled from Europe to the Americas who were in debt or commited other infractions, and worked for 7 years to pay it off.
  • The idea came about for the need of cheap labor
  • Became vital to the early colonial economy, until they were replaced by African slaves

Most indentured servants signed a contract that stated they owed about 7 years of their life, give or take, to a person. That person was to provide transportation to the new world, food, and shelter. Indentured Servants were very expensive and not many people had them.
