PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ACT 5 SCENE 1

  • Lady Macbeth begins suffering from delusions of the murders of Duncan and Banquo.
  • A doctor is called, but the doctor feels as if there is nothing that can be done for her.
  • Macduff and Malcolm strategize against Macbeth.

ACT 5 SCENE 2

  • Four lords of Scotland — Lennox, Menteth, Angus, and Caithness — resolve to join Malcolm and the English forces
  • Encamped at Birnam Wood.
  • Very short scene.

ACT 5 SCENE 3

  • Macbeth ignores reports of an invasion
  • He takes the prophecies literal and believes he is invincible in battle.
  • When a servant reports that a huge army has been spotted Macbeth seems to lose courage, but quickly spurns the servant and requests his army to be put on.

ACT 5 SCENE 4

  • Malcolm orders his troops to cut branches from Birnam Wood to conceal the size if the army.
  • Within doing this, Malcolm unknowingly fulfills the witches prophecy.

ACT 5 SCENE 5

  • Macbeth confidently scorns all other advancing armies to find out the queen is dead, by whose hand is not certain.
  • Word comes to macbeth that Birmam wood seems to have been uprooted. Macbeth recalls the prophecy of act IV.
  • Macbeth wishes to deny this, yet must face the powerful truth.

ACT 5 SCENE 6

  • Birnam wood has been uprooted.
  • Malcolm's army, disguised in Birnam woe has reached Dunsinane.
  • Siward leads the battle, while Malcolm and Macduff take the rear.

ACT 5 SCENE 7

  • Foreshadows the destruction of a tyrant.
  • Macbeth is challenged by the son of Siward.
  • Macduff eagerly searches for the man responsible for the murder of his family.
  • Macbeth's forces have surrendered Dunsinane castle, but there is still unfinished business.

ACT 5 SCENE 8

  • Macduff and Macbeth finally meet upon the battlefield.
  • Words are thrown, including Macbeths final soliloquy.
  • Macbeth, the tyrant finally falls from power with his death.

ACT 5 SCENE 9

  • Dunsinane castle is taken.
  • Malcolm is proclaimed king by all assembled thanes.

SCENE STEALER

  • Macduff is the scene stealer in Act V because he is the dominant character who transforms the entire play. He is the killer of MacBeth. After beheading Macbeth, putting his head on a stick, and presenting it to Malcolm, Malcolm is crowned the new king.
