MARCO POLO

Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in the year 1254. Marco's mother died when he was young so he was raised by extended family.

When he was 17 he made his first trip to China with his uncle and father. The three went to China for a favor to a Mongol prince. They brought 100 priests to China to teach.

The Polo family were the first Europeans to travel to China and Mongolia.

Most of his travels were due to his work as advisor for Prince Kablai Khan.

He traveled from Europe to the east along the Silk Road, stayed in China for 17 years. He met the emperor Khublai Khan and because a government officer.
Then he traveled back on sea.

He wrote down his travels and introduced Europeans to Central Asia and China which inspired explorers such as Christopher Columbus.

When he returned he told about his findings of jade, porcelain, silk, and ivory in Asia.
