REASONING BEHIND LOCATION

  • It was a Dutch colony named New Amsterdam and the English wanted to gain control of the valuable port. England sent a fleet to attack the colony but the government surrendered without a fight. King Charles II gave the colony to his brother, the Duke of York, who renamed it to New York.
  • It became a middle region colony.

  • The land is very fertile and ideal for farming.
  • It was named after the Duke of York.
  • It was originally a Dutch colony.
  • The economy prospered because of the good trading setup with the Indians.
  • They could choose to worship any religion and not get persecuted.

  • Peter Stuyvesant - Last Dutch governor of colonial New York.
  • Jonas Salk - A doctor who invented the first effective vaccine against polio. He later tried to find a cure for cancer.
  • Shirley Chrisholm - In 1968 she became the first black woman to be elected in the House of Representatives.

  • Robert Fulton - An American inventor who built the first efficient steamboat inaugurating a new era of power driven navigation.
  • William Bradford - He published the fist newspaper in New York called, "The New York Gazette."

OVERVIEW

  • Population- in 1664, New York was home to 8 thousand people. Now in the year of 2015, it is home to 8 million people.
  • New York is now the home of the Empire State Building, time square, and the Statue Of Liberty!
  • State animal: beaver
  • State bird: eastern bluebird
  • Became a state on July 26, 1788
