CHARACTERISTICS

  • Size of a house cat
  • Long slender body
  • Small head and short cute snout
  • Round ears too big for their small head
  • Tiny marble like brown eyes

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Dark brown fur that coats their slender body
  • In summer their fur turns light brown
  • Yellow patch on their neck that makes them distinct
  • Short legs with large paws
  • Sharp semi retractable claws for climbing

BEHAVIOUR

  • Very curious and love to play around
  • Very excitable species
  • During the summer they stay awake for 16 hours

Their role in a food chain is to keep the populations of animals they eat under control.

For example the meadow voles and the snow shoe hares. Especially the snow shoe hares because they reproduce fast.

DIET

The Newfoundland pine martens favourite food in the summer is meadow voles.

When the season turns to winter their favorite food to eat is snowshoe hares.

They are not picky eaters they will eat generally anything. They will eat.....

Past population size: In the 1980's the population was around 630-875 of it's species

Present population: Around 300.

They live in the Taiga biome.

Pine martens can be found all over Canada and even all over the world but this species can only be found in Newfoundland.

You can find Newfoundland pine martens and can be found in the 13,000 square kilometers of the western island.

The changes that have undergone the pine martens habitat has affected the distribution of this wildlife.

Poachers are killing them for their thick, and shiny fur.

When hunters lay traps to catch other animals they accidentally catch the martens.

The biggest factor is deforestation.

Their habitat is being destroyed.

The province of Newfoundland are making great efforts to protect them.

They have made designated national parks to replenish the population.

They have tried captive breeding programs but they have been ceased.

Their are limits where the companies can cut trees.

They are under legal protection by the province.

Their are bans on capturing them and putting traps down in their habitat.
