PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Newton's Third Law

Audio: Isaac Newton developed several laws that aim to explain how the world works, specifically motion. This presentation looks at Newton's third law.

Untitled Slide

Audio: Newton's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Forces are equal and opposite.

Audio: It doesn't matter the size or strength of each object, the force exerted by one object to another will be equal. The force of the machine on the girl's arm is equal to the force put on the machine from the girl's arm.

Action- rocket pushing gas out.

Audio: lets use the example of a rocket launching into space. The action is the gases being expelled from the rocket.

Reaction- gas pushing rocket up.

Audio: The reaction is the gas pushing back on the rocket, which launches the rocket up and into space.

Untitled Slide

Audio: Another example would be a baseball player hitting a baseball. Action- bat applies a force to the ball, reaction ball applies an equal force to the bat.

Action force? Reaction force?

Audio: Now it is time to test your knowledge. Identify the following action force and reaction force for when a bowling ball hits the pins.

Identify the action and reaction force.

Audio: look at the motion in your life and try to identify the action/reaction forces. You will be surprised at how many force pairs exist.
