GEOGRAPHY

  • Two mouuntain ranges that seperate into three distinct areas
  • Coast is rough with small inlets and high cliffs
  • Main rivers are the Zadorra and Bayas
  • Climate to the north is oceanic, climate in the middle is a continental climate with varying degrees of the northern oceanic climate, and the Ebro valley has a pure continental climate

THE BATTLE OF VITORIA

  • This battle took place during the Napoleonic war
  • Joseph Boneparte attacked the city, but his French defenses quickly crumbled to Thomas Picton's 3rd division
  • This defeat led to the end of Napoleonic rule in Spain

JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO

  • Born in 1476
  • Completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth
  • After Ferdinad Magellan's death, Elcano took command of the Victoria and finished the trip back to Spain
  • He died in 1526

HISTORY

  • Before the Spanish Constitution of 1978, these three provinces were known as Provincias Vascongadas.
  • The Gernika Statute forms the structure of the former autonomous community

  • Located in the north of Spain
  • Has three seperate provinces (Araba, Gipuzkoa, and Bizkaia)
  • Currently the wealthiest region in all of Spain

HISTORY CONT.

  • Industrialization in this region began in the mid 19th century
  • The Basque national party formed an autonomous government during the Spanish Civil War
  • It was soon rejected but democracy was restored in the 1970s
