DEFINITION OF PHILOSOPHICAL

  • phil·o·soph·i·cal ˌfiləˈsäfək(ə)l/ Definition: relating or devoted to the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence.

PURPOSE OF PHILISOPHICAL LITERATURE

  • Purpose: The main purpose for philosophical literature is to teach morality.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES TO PHILOSOPHICAL LITERATURE

  • Advantages: Philosophical literature recognizes that literature can affect readers, whether subtly or directly, and that the message of a work is not just a message it is important. Disadvantages: Some people believe that this type of literature can be too judgemental and that literature shouldn’t just be based on morals but also on the artistic qualities. Some philosophical authors who have displayed this type of literature style are Mark Twain in “Huckleberry Finn” and Alexander Pope in “An Essay on Man”

  • of or relating to a person's life: He's gathering biographical data for his book on Milton.

BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICISM

  • a critical approach that uses the events of an author’s life to explain meaning in the author’s work.
  • Biographical Criticism allows readers and critics to better comprehend a literary work knowing that the literature was written by an actual person. Being able to understand someone's life very much helps readers draw conclusions and make sense of what they are reading.

  • What is an autobiography? Autobiography: A narrative of a person's life, written by, or as having been written by that person. What is an biography? Biography: A history of a person’s life. What is a memoir? Memoir: A narrative recollection of the writer's earlier experiences, especially those involving unusual people, places, or events.
