SOCIAL STRUCTURE

  • Phoenicians has three classes that they were in.
  • Social class - Top class, priests, government officials
  • Middle class - Merchants, craftspeople, farmers
  • Working class - Slaves, servants

RELIGION

  • Phoenicians had many gods and goddesses.
  • All the cities worshiped at least one god and/or goddess.

GOVERNMENT

  • Kings
  • Independent city states, colonies
  • Economy and population pressure forced them to go to the seas.
  • Each city had a government, god, and ruler for life

SYSTEM OF WRITING

  • Called Arabic.
  • Basis for many languages.

TECHNOLOGY/CONTRIBUTION

  • Ships
  • Keeled hull
  • Phoenician alphebet
  • Maritime tradition

Historical Artifacts

  • This is an ivory plaque made by Phoenicians.
  • Might have been a piece of luxury furniture.
