PREGNANCY

WHAT ARE TRIMESTERS?
Trimesters are three-month periods during a pregnancy. The entire pregnancy usually lasts about 9 months.

FIRST TRIMESTER

  • fertilized egg, now called an embryo, implants in the uterus
  • major organs start to form
  • facial features start to appear
  • muscle movements begin
  • arms, legs, hands and feet form; it's now a fetus
  • internal organs are formed

SECOND TRIMESTER

  • at start, fetus is nearly 3" long
  • at end, fetus is about 9"
  • mother may feel movements
  • fetus reacts to sound
  • eyelashes and eyebrows are visible
  • eyes open
  • gender can be identified
  • grows fingernails and toenails

tHIRD TRIMESTER

  • fetus can practice breathe
  • layers of fat form
  • organs can fully function
  • fetus responds to light
  • can hear voices

The Last Few Weeks
