US CONSTITUTION
The constitution provides rights and freedoms and it's the basic framework for the American government.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT
The framers tried to make sure that the constitution gave the government enough power to ensure peace and order.

FEDERALISM
The fourth guiding principle "federalism" divides power between the central government and the various state governments.

INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY
An independent judiciary was considered essential by the framers to support the rule of law and preserve limited government.

POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY
It means that power resides not with the government or its leaders, but with the people.

RULE OF LAW
This principle requires that the American people and their government abide by a system of laws.

SEPARATION OF POWERS/CHECKS AND BALANCES
Separating the powers of government among the three branches would ensure that no one branch could dominate.
9.
INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS
This amendment protects the rights of individuals to speak their minds and act on their beliefs without fear of arrest or persecution by the government.
