US CONSTITUTION

  • The constitution provides rights and freedoms and it's the basic framework for the American government.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT

  • The framers tried to make sure that the constitution gave the government enough power to ensure peace and order.

FEDERALISM

  • The fourth guiding principle "federalism" divides power between the central government and the various state governments.

INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY

  • An independent judiciary was considered essential by the framers to support the rule of law and preserve limited government.

POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY

  • It means that power resides not with the government or its leaders, but with the people.

RULE OF LAW

  • This principle requires that the American people and their government abide by a system of laws.

SEPARATION OF POWERS/CHECKS AND BALANCES

  • Separating the powers of government among the three branches would ensure that no one branch could dominate.

INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

  • This amendment protects the rights of individuals to speak their minds and act on their beliefs without fear of arrest or persecution by the government.
