What is a Religion?

A religion is a belief based on a god(s). Different cultures, clothes, laws, and other things like that are often included in a religion.

What is Monotheism?

There are two kinds of religions: Monotheism and Polytheism. Monotheism religions only believe and worship one God.

What Polytheism?

Polytheistic religions believe and worship more than one God, like the ancient Greeks.

Christianity

Christianity is the biggest religion in the world. They believe that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. He preached a religion of love and kindness around 30 CE. Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah (Savior). Christians are grouped in many dominations. Their holy book is the bible.

  • Jesus was born in about 7 B.C.
  • Christianity has 2.1 billion followers worldwide
  • Christianity actually has its roots in Judaism
  • In 2001, The World Christian Encyclopedia counted 33830 Christian Denominations

Judaism

Judaism is a monotheistic religion similar to Christianity. Their holy book is the Torah and their symbol is a star. The followers are called Jews. It was founded by Abraham around 2000 BCE. Jews believe that God gave Moses The Ten Commandments. Jews believe that they descended from Abraham and Sarah who lived what is now called Iraq.

JUDAISM FACTS

  • Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world
  • Today about 14 million people are Jews worldwide
  • It begun in 2000 BCE, and the founder was Abraham

Islam

Islam begun around 610 CE in Southwest Asia, Followers are called Muslims. The founder is Muhammad. Their holy book is the Qur'an, it states how people should live their lives. In Arabic, Islam means 'surrender' to the will of Allah (God).
Muslims believe that Muhammad is the last and greatest prophet of Islam. Other prophets include Abraham, Moses and Jesus.

ISLAM FACTS

  • Muslims have something called the five pillars of faith.
  • It something what all Muslims must for fill in their lifetime
  • They are:
  • 1. Prayer
  • 2. Giving to Charity
  • 3. Belief and submission to one God (Allah).
  • 4. Fasting during the month of Ramadan
  • 5. And a trip (hajj) to Mecca once in a lifetime

  • All religions have a holy book
  • They all believe in the same God
  • They all are Monotheistic religions
  • They all have symbols

  • Muslims wear cloths on their heads
  • All religions have different beliefs on Jesus
  • Different religious laws
  • Different days of worship
  • Different languages
