  • president Warren G harding promised a ''Return to Normalcy''and won the 1920 election by landslide.
  • promoted the growth of American industry and a strong economy that was independant of foreign influence
  • He made a separate Peace Treaty with Germany to end World War 1.
  • reduced Government spending and cut taxes for businesses.
  • American businesses thrived such as the Assembly line it produced automobiles for the american public
  • prices were cheaper than ever and Americans could buy cheaper goods and products.

STUDY ANTI-IMMIGRANT BELIEFS

  • immigrants faced suspicion and discrimination especially after the Russian revolution
  • socialism and communism were dangerous and against American values
  • there was bombings in the spring and summer of 1919 the events helped fuel the Red scare
  • Sedition Act was passed during World War 1
Americans were afraid of loosing their private property and liked the liberty and economic freedoms of America U.S soldiers returning from world war 1formed the American legion. They wanted to protect America from influences of Bolshevik revolution in Russia.

STUDY: INCREASED RACISM

  • African Americans migrated north to cities such as Detroit,Michigan, and chicago
  • 1914-1920 300,000 to 500,000 African Americans left their southern homes for jobs.
  • 1910-1930 African Americans migrated away from south to escape racisim.
Many Puerto Ricans migrated North and settled largely in New York city.Over 20 years more than 2 million people migrated to Northern and Midwestern cities.During the 1920'sthousands of Mexicans moved to the U.S.Branceros were mexican workers they did labor on farms,ranches,mines and factories. African Americans and Mexican immigrants faced discrimination in the us, los Angeles and many other cities in the west.

BLACK AND WOMEN IN THE 1920'S

  • women had to stay home,cook,and raise the children while the men had went out and made money for the family
  • women made less money than men did.
  • The one convention that pushed for women rights was in Seneca Falls new York in 1848
  • (AWSA)tried to get every state to vote on women's suffrage.
  • The (NWSA)wanted a constitutional amendment saying that women could vote. That meant that every women had gained the right to vote at one time throughout the nation
  • The nineteenth amendment to the constitution was approved on August 18th 1920.
American women were seen to have specific roles in society they mostly had to do with home and child rearing .The world had been for men while women were to guide and nurture ,that's why teaching and nursing were seen as good choices for females .Women did fight for improved rights ,During and after the industrial revolution .However many people began to move from farms to cities to take jobs at new factories .During the 1900's women found work as secretaries and managers in offices they made less money than men.
