In India there was a house that had a wife, husband, and son. One day when they went on a walk in their garden they came across a mongoose. The boy thought it was dead but the father saw it had some life on it.

When the family washed and warmed the mongoose, it woke up. The ,mongoose went on the Teddy's shoulder and felt much better. The mother decided to named the mongoose Rikki Tikki

Rikki decided to explore and so he went to the garden. In the garden he saw Darzee the tailbird. Darzee and his wife were crying, Rikki asked " what is the matter?". Darzee's wife replied " We're very upset, one of our baby bird fell out the nest and Nag ate him."

Rikki said " That is very sad, but I'm a stranger here, who's Nag?" Suddenly a cobra slithered toward Rikki, " Who is Nag?" He said " I am Nag." Rikki felt afraid for a minute, but then he realized that a mongoose purpose is to kill snakes, his eyes turned sparkling red and he started to walk toward Nag.

In Nag's cold heart he was afraid, suddenly Darzee's wife cried " Look behind you Rikki, Nag's wife, behind you!" Then Nag's wife, Naginia stroke but Rikki dodged it. " Wicked, Wicked Darzee!" Then both of them turned and left into the tall grass. Rikki tried to follow them but the tall grass was too hard to see.

Atfter Nag and Naginia left, teddy came to Rikki, he reached in his pocket and handed Rikki a treat. All of the sudden a Brown dust snake named Kariot, popped out of the sand " Be careful, I am death!" Kariot said. Rikki chattered in rage and raced to bite the snake. Teddy quickly pulled his hand away from the snake. Rikki and the Kariot fought, each trying to bite one another. Rikki soon killed Kariot and by the time Tedd's father came, Rikki showed him the dead snake. " Ue saved your life Teddy." The Father said and he put Kariot in the rubbish heap.

That night while Rikki slept, he woke up in the middle of the night and went to the back of the house where he found Chunchundra, the muskrat. Chunchundra said " Oh, please don't kill me!" Rikki replied " Do you think a mongoose would kill a rat? " Chunchundra warned Rikki " you must be careful, Nag is everywhere." Rikki heard nothing but silence and faint sounds of scratches coming from Nag.

In the back of the house near the bathroom were the two snake couples talking. " I will go and I will kill the Big man and his wife and the little boy if I can." Said Nag. " When the house is empty the mongoose will leave." Said Naginia, Nag asked " So, there is everthing to be gained by killing them?"Naginia answered " When the house is empty we again will be King and Queen of the house and don't forget that our eggs that will hatch soon will need space and quiet." Nag understood and went into bathroom.

Rikki overheard the two cobra's conversation and had to stop Nag from killing the Father. As Nag entered the bathroom he wondered " The big man will come in here with a stick." He thought " But when he comes for a bath, he will not have the stick." Nag coiled himself around the jar basket and thought " I shall have to wait till the big man comes for a bath."

Rikki entered quietly and Waited on top of the basket for Nag to cLl asleep. " I must put an end to this plan." Rikki thought " I must attack the head, and never let go." Rikki saw his chance and leap down on Nag. Nag was surprised, but he still tried to shake Rikki off, but Rikki held on. Nag tossed and shook his head trying to get Rikki off then BOOM! Rikki found himself still holding Nag's head but Nag was dead, the Father had shot him in the head. "Look m dear the little mongoose has saved our lives this time." Rikki was put with Teddy who was still asleep "Oh Rikki, your so brave and handsome." Said Teddy's mom and Rikki fell to sleep

In the morning Rikki didn't eat brains with the family who were sitting in the patio, he needed to find Naginia and her eggs. Rikki went to Darzee who was singing with glory of Nag's death. Rikki asked "Where are Naginia's eggs?" But Darzee just kept singing. Darzee's wife knew that baby Cobras would be bad news "In the melon patch and Naginia is mourning for the lost of Nag in the rubbish heap." "Quickly, go to Naginia and distract her while I go to destroy her eggs." Said Rikki.

Darzee's wife went to the rubbish heap and cried out "Oh my wing! The boy threw a stone at it and broke it!" Naginia looked up and said "you warn that Rikki that I will have killed him at the place where Nag was killed." Darzee's wife kept limping and pretending to be hurt. "What is the use of the running? I'm sure to catch you, little fool look at me!" But Darzee's wife knew better, for bird that looks upon a snake eye, get so frightened that cannot move.

Rikki has found the eggs and smashed them all but one egg. Darzee's wife flew to Rikki "Rikki I have led Naginia but she went to the family and oh! Come quickly she means killing!" Rikki ran to the patio with the last egg in his mouth. Naginia had her sights on Teddy "Steady Teddy, you mustn't move Teddy." Said the father. "Son of the man that killed Nag, if you move, I strike and if you don't move, I strike."

Rikki came to the patio "Turn around Naginia, turn and fight." Rikki said "All in good timing, I will settle m scores with you if you come any closer I shall strike the boy." Said Naginia without turning her head. Rikki showed the last egg "WhT price for a egg? For a young cobra?" Naginia turned her head "Ohhh, give it to me." She said the father lashed out and grabbed Teddy out of Naginia's reach. Rikki and Naginia faced each other and Naginia tried to bite him while Rikki tried to bite her.

Rikki drew further away from the egg and Naginia when Naginia wa close enough, she grabbed her last egg and shot out of the patio and ran. Rikki chased her through the garden and into a hole where Naginia and Nag used to live. Rikki had a hold on Naginia's tail but any mongoose that went into cobra's hole was not certain to come out. "Rikki is a goner for Naginia will certainly get him." Darzee said 'We must sing his death song." But then in the middle of Darzee's song, Rikki popped out and came into the light "It's ok, Nagina will never be heard again." Darzee sang with glee again and the garden was safe from any cobra.

17.

That night Rikki was given all the food he wanted and he went to sleep with Teddy knowing that no snake will come across the family and he still kept that thought.
