What is the purpose of monumental architecture?
To represent something big in their Empire and represent power and wealth in these different Empires. Every Empire has a different style of architecture!

  • Located East of the Roman Empire
  • Commissioned around A.D. 70-72 by Titus
  • Largest amphitheater in the Roman world
  • Exterior 3 stories of arch entrances.
  • Largest amphitheater in Roman World

most memorable part of the colosseum

  • Its a freestanding structure made of stone & concert.
  • exterior is three stories of arched entrances.
  • total of 80 around the Colosseum, supported by semicircle colums.
  • Each story had a different style of colums.
  • The best is that it seats more than 50,000 spectators to watch the shows.

purpose of the colosseum

  • The main purpose for this structure was violent gladiators fights
  • It was a theater for the people to watch these events.
  • Things watched: gladiator fights, combat, hunts, wild animal fights, etc.
  • Men mainly fought for the gladiator fights.
  • others that fought here were generally slaves, criminals & prisoners.

  • To show the various of shows for entertainment.
  • Creating a massive, breath-taking structure to convey their wealth & power.
  • To seat 80,000 people, each with a unobstructed view, creating a diversion.
  • Ensure the support and popularity for Emperor Vespasain and Titus.
  • To convey the extent of Rome's conquest of different countries.

  • 753 B.C.- Rome was found!
  • 509 B.C.- Rome became republic.
  • 218 B.C.- hannibal leads the carthage army across the Alps to attack Rome
  • 73 B.C- Spartacus leads the slaves in the uprising.
  • 45 B.C- Julius Caesar is the first dictator of Rome.

  • 27 B.C.- 1st roman Emperor, Caesar Agustus
  • 64 A.D.- most of Rome burns
  • 80 A.D.- The colosseum is built!
