SLAVERY

  • Thousands came against their will to work for no pay and to be treated like animals. For instance, Venture, subsequent to being enslaved against his will, had been a prince before his kidnapping.
  • Some slaves worked indoors on household chores, while others indured the more grueling tasks that awaited them outdoors.
  • Often, they were punished unfairly for otherwise mundane responses or actions
  • Many slaves were not freed, while a lucky few paid for their freedom (such as Venture did, paying 71 pounds, 2 shillings to walk as a free man).

THE STONO REBELLION
The king of Spain offered protection and freedom to all of the slaves that would go there, causing many slaves to group together, steal horses, and head for Spain.
Angola slaves, who'd heard of the successful reception of slaves in Augustine, assembled and spurred rebellion.

THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY
Tobacco, grown due to it's economic benefits, overshadowed the growth of other essential crops, resulting in Famine. In addition, this growing industry called for extensive manual labor.
