PISA

Politics or Education?
Baird et al (2011) refer to the 'policy-making sabre rattling rhetoric' that arises from international rankings.

Ireland

  • High performing in PISA reading until 2006
  • In 2006 Ireland dropped 31 points from our 2000 score
  • New focus on reading and literacy and numeracy in schools
  • Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life (2011)
For some interesting background on Ireland's 2006 PISA results, read Eivers (2010) "PISA: Issues in Implementation and Interpretation'. The Irish Journal of Education 38: 94-118

This definition of literacy is from Ireland's National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy

The Education Research Centre (ERC) in Drumcondra in Dublin conducts National Assessments in Reading and Mathematics every three years, based on a national sample. Targets were set for 2020, the end of the period covered by the National Strategy. This slide was prepared by the ERC for the presentation of the 2014 results showing that the 2020 targets were exceeded.

As with the previous picture, this data was prepared by the Educational Research Centre, as part of its work evaluating the scheme of support for Disadvantaged Schools. Further data on the evaluation, and on the National Assessment of Reading and Mathematics are on the ERC website - www.er.ie. ERC also administers PISA in Ireland, and the national results and some insightful commentary from the ERC team are also available there.

Families

Support for reading in particular
The government funded helpmykidlearn.ie website and Facebook page is beginning to be widely used; explicit reference is made in Ireland's literacy strategy to the importance of families and communities in supporting reading and literacy development.
