WHAT ARE STIMULANTS?

  • Psychoactive drugs that induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or both

  • Adderall
  • Vivarin
  • Caffeine
  • Nicotine
  • Cocaine

IMMEDIATE EFFECTS:

  • Enhanced alertness
  • Wakefulness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Crash after drug wears off
  • Dizziness

LONG TERM EFFECTS:

  • Easy to become tolerant
  • Severe mood swings
  • Depression/ Agression
  • Risk of heart attack
  • Extreme weight loss
  • Strokes
  • Horrible dental problems

HOW IS IT TAKEN?

  • By mouth
  • Snorted
  • Injected through vein

AFFECT ON TEENS:

  • They abuse drugs
  • They become addicted
  • Athletes or college students use it most
  • Leads to the use of other drugs

STATS:

  • 1.2 million non medical users (12 and older) in the U.S.
  • 360,000 individuals received treatment because of addiction
  • Alcohol was found present in 38% of emergency rooms involving stimulants

FACTS:

  • Can be used for medical purposes
  • Relax the bronchial muscles
  • Usually added to pain killers- more effective
  • Helps w/ HIV or cancer
  • Used to stay awake

  • Easy to become addicted
  • Teens overuse it
  • When used for medical purposes it is usually taken by mouth
