DEFINITION

  • relating to or denoting a violent act or attack carried out by a person who does not expect to survive it.

STATISTICS

  • Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24
  • Each day in our nation, there are an average of over 3,470 attempts by young people grades 9-12.
  • More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.

REASONS

  • Some people grow anxiety and can’t cope with it
  • Others suffer from depression and also want to end it all
  • Bullying is a major cause of suicide .

FACTS

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages
  • There is one death by suicide in the US every 12 minutes
  • The highest suicide rates in the US are among Whites, American Indians and Alaska Natives

MYTHS

  • You have to be mentally ill to think about suicide.
  • People who talk about suicide aren’t serious and won’t go through with it.
  • Once a person has made a serious suicide attempt, that person is unlikely to make another.

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself Looking for a way to kill oneself Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain Talking about being a burden to others Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly Sleeping too little or too much

  • Talk with the person
  • Be there person that they can trust
  • Show them you care
  • Let them talk
  • Listen

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT

  • Promise to not do anything crazy
  • Stay away from alcohol
  • Make your home safe
  • Reach out for people

EFFECTS

  • Extreme guilt for not preventing the suicide Failure because a person they loved felt unloved and committed suicidesuicide-effect-family-healthyplace Anger or resentment at the person who chose to take his or her own life Confusion Distress over unresolved issues (many of which often exist in families where one person has a mental illness, which is common in people who die by suicide)
