MY HOuse

"The House on Mango Street is ours, and we don't have to pay rent"
I've lived in two houses in my life. We moved out of the first house when my parents income was big enough. The new house i thought was very big. It was away from everybody else. Eventually stores showed up. We soon got a neighbor. We talked and helped each other out. They eventually had to move. We then got new neighbors. Our house is near the woods. You can see wildlife. We renovated the basement with paint and carpet. We've pushed back the woods around our house. We have farms and subdivisions near us. We have a small pond near us. Our dog patrols the yard. The neighbors cat and dog are occasionally found near our house. We've never had a fire.
I've been face to face with deer. Military planes fly over my house.

MY sister and friends

"The boys and the girls live in separate worlds"
My sister is different from me. She prefers to not worry about things. She doesn't always listen to the family. She spends more time with her boyfriend than with the family. Although shes 21, she still has an obligation to the family. She has a major learning disability so its difficult to get her to understand something. She wants to live her own life but she doesn't know how too. Her boyfriends have threatened to break my sister away from the family. One such boyfriend was racist and called the police to say we kidnapped her. She has a job but they push her around. I haven't had a best friend since the 8th grade. I had to break away from my old group because they began to treat me as a third wheel. I had to break away from my best friend from kindergarden because he as well was just using me as a filler. I don't see a need for a best friend for the rest of high school due to the short time left. I have other friends but no best friends. People in this school have groups of friends. They fill up entire tables. They're usually all female or all male. I've never been part of a group. Although I don't have many friends, I have many allies.

MY name\

"They say my name funny as if the syllables were made out of tin"
I like my name. I've rarely seen people with the same spelling as mine. My name is celtic. My name means poet. I wouldn't change my name. People misspell my name. My parents almost named me something else. I'm proud of my last name. My middle name is my fathers first name. My last name is British. My is one of the 200 most popular in the US. Its frustrating when there's somebody in the class with the same name. My name can be spelled differently. The most common spelling I've encountered is Devon. My parents thought about naming me something else. I'm the only person in my family whose name starts with a D.

Sense of Humor

"We are more alike than you would know"
I have a weird sense of humor. I laugh at mean jokes. I don't like knock knock jokes. Some people have annoying laughs. Laughter is contagious. I like long jokes. A person laughs at least once a day. I've laughed for a hour. My family has different senses of humor. My sister wont laugh at anything i say. I like watching comedy TV shows. Jokes i tell are usually directed at someone. I laughed a lot during Cross Country. I've laughed at my dog when she does something weird. I've laughed in the wrong situations. I laugh a lot in world history. I've laughed when people have fallen down or made a mistake.

MY neighbors

"Looking smaller still, our house with its feet tucked under"
Our neighbors have a weird house. They have cargo containers in their yard. They have a pool. They have ATVs and other vehicles. They also have a basketball hoop. Theirs no empty space in their house. There's something on every wall and in every room. Their house has a secret room. Their house is bigger then mine. They use our trampoline without permission. Their dog sometimes roams around our house. They took over a fence we built at the end of the driveway. The neighbors kid and his friend roam around and make noise. They have a cat which sometimes goes into our yard and makes my dog paranoid. Our neighbor tries to sell my dad things. He thinks that we are financially unstable. There house is two stories compared to our one story house. They have another smaller caged dog which barks around the clock. The neighbors kid will ride my bus my senior year. They're the second family to move into that house.

My sisters friends

"Under the streetlight, dancing by herself"
My sister falls head over heels for everyone of her boyfriends. She's wanted to marry every single one. She wants to move in with them. She thinks everything is perfect between them. All of her boyfriends have done something majorly wrong. She condones anything they do wrong. She honorarily inducts every one into the family. They've never had manners. They never leave each other alone. She invites him to every family occasion. She thinks he'll never mistreat her. She spends more money than she has on them.

THe new generation

"You get tired of being worried about kids who aren't even yours"
I didn't make a lot of trouble when I was a kid. I followed any rules to the letter. I've never played around in school. I haven't been yelled at by my parents for 10 years. I see kids being disrespectful all the time. At my moms work, kids are rude and want candy all the time. I've heard kids say they hate their parents. My cousin yelled at his mom while we were on vacation. I've heard little kids cursing and saying racist terms. I get dragged into trouble by my friends though. When i'm talking to my friends and they do something wrong, i get pulled down with them. There's been times where my friends steal my notebooks and the teacher yells at me. Kids nowadays think they don't need school and they can do anything they want. There are classes were i barely say a word but everybody else feels the need to talk so we all get punished. Kids goof off and fail classes and yet they don't care, but they still want to get a good career. Other students get upset when they get in trouble. Every kid in this school thinks there better than everybody else in either academics or athletics. Students are being rewarded for doing what they were supposed to do. I know people who when they get detention they just brush it off. In school nowadays, the more friends you have, the more power you have.

aspirations

"She doesn't want to spend her life in a factory or behind a rolling pin"
I want to be a business man. I want to be in control of a company. I want to be just as successful as my dad. My mom tells me to not forget to have fun. I tell her that i'll worry about fun when I retire. I don't hear a lot of people say they want to be in business. Most guys I know want to play football. I just want to get my own house, a dog, and a cool car. I thought about being in cyber- security but I don't like math. I would like to get an MBA, and a bachelors in math so that I'll have the greatest chance of getting hired. I would like to get a job as soon as possible. If I get a job then I'd have more money and experience. My parents tell me that I'm going to hate having a job. I think i'm going to like it. Although its not the same, I liked being a library aid on 8th grade so I think I'll like any job in business. I've only heard one other high schooler say they want to go into business. I don't care which company hires me. I would like to become an executive. I would like to have a six figure salary. I would like to be able to be able to say i'm my own boss.

Nick names

"You better not be saying that..."
Until last year, i never had a nickname. I was a nobody. Nobody knew enough about me to call me anything. Last year in track, my coach noticed that I was really quiet. He called me smooth for the remainder that I stayed last year. When I was at a summer camp with my troop, I got the nickname Iceman. We played cornhole while we were there and I would cancel every point the other team had. I then found out later that I was also called that because I lead apparently with an iron fist. I didn't get another nickname until track this year, I was still a nobody in track. I ran a fast two mile at one meet and the coach was impressed. He started calling me monster. He called me that since February. Other track runners have nicknames too. He's called people shorty, orange, and Gilligan. At the last meet when I broke my record, the coaches talked about calling me godzilla. My family doesn't have a nickname for me. I call my sister shorty sometimes. I call my parents by their middle names sometimes. I call my sisters boyfriend slimjim.

Food

"Pointing a butter knife at me as if I'm starting trouble"
The schools food is bad. I try and pack as often as I can. The schools food is the worst I've ever had. I have to pack food because eating school food before track is a big mistake. I have to avoid a lot of dairy too because of track. For half this school year, I ate the same thing. A bottle of water, a banana, protein bar, and a sandwich, everyday for months. I'm now sick of bananas and sandwiches of any kind. I haven't had a school cookie or snack since 2nd grade. I finally got to try one this year. I rarely get to use the ice cream machine. The cafeteria is a mess. People cut in line. People will take up space just to buy cookies or a snack. I don't sit with anybody at lunch. I used to sit with a group of my friends for awhile. People talk to me occasionally but only if they need something. I use lunch to get extra work done. People aren't spread out in the cafeteria, they're clustered in groups. When fights happen the whole cafeteria implodes on the fight.

Growing

"All day waiting, the door locked"
When I was young I didn't know anything. I thought Everything would go my way. When I was in elementary school I had a lot of friends. I didn't play video-games or watch TV a lot. I changed my mind about what job I wanted hundreds of times. It seemed like my whole family was always 5 minutes away. In elementary school everything was easy. When I got to middle school a lot of things changed. I lost a lot of friends. Everybody else started using curse words i'd never heard before. The food in schools has gotten better. I wanted to get a job as soon as possible. As I got older I absorbed more information. I found out more about the problems in the world. Instead of learning about colors and math, I now had to learn about finances and world events. As I got older I did more stuff with my family. My parents gave me more responsibility. I could stay home alone now. My sister got older as well so I saw her less. I became a lot more stressed when I learned of the problems our family had that were once subliminal.

MY job

"I thought I'd find an easy job"
I changed my mind a lot about the job I wanted. I wanted a job as soon as possible. I went from wanting to be in the military to a scientist. The first thing I had close to a job was a library aid. My parents said that I'm not going to like having a job. I was finally offered a job at the VA Outdoor Center. They offered it to me after I volunteered there. The guy who would be my boss told me that I needed to get stronger. If I worked there I would have to pickup canoes and move them. I would generally be doing stuff outside. I would get to be outside all summer and I'd be near the Rappahannock. I would be the youngest one there. My dad doesn't want me to start working there untiI I can drive. I would get to go on canoe and hiking trips while i'm there. After I get out of college I would like to work in business. I don't have any preference in companies to work for. I would eventually like to become an executive. If that was to fail then I would join the Navy. I would become an officer. I would stay in the Navy for 20 years so I could get a pension. I don't i'm going to retire until i'm at least 65. My main goal is to never have a job I don't want.

"I think diseases have no eyes"
I've never gotten in trouble in school. The most punishment I've gotten in schools is lunch detention in 7th grade. I don't like getting in trouble. Most students I know who've gotten in trouble, don't care. I know kids who've gotten tons of referrals. Most of the incidents I see, are because of talking. I sometimes get into trouble because of the people around me. My parents haven't been mad at me in a long time. My quietness somewhat keeps me out of trouble. People have said when near me, that it's always the quiet ones. The track team gets yelled at because they're being lazy but i haven't been. Teachers have yelled at my for being disruptive but I didn't say a word. I've seen students argue with their teachers over wether they were talking. I've seen a lot of phones get taken away. They sometimes take their phones back. Very few kids get their phone taken away even though it's out in the open. I've seen teachers tackle kids who are fighting. I overhear a lot of trash talk. I've nearly been written up in my journalism class because of who I sit with. I would be very shocked if I ever got in serious trouble.

mom

"The only grown-up we know who likes to play"
My mom is awesome. She's middle aged. She works at a doctors office as a receptionist. She's lived in Virginia her whole life. She tries to go to all of my track meets. She let's me choose where to eat. She loves cats and dogs. She watches old tv shows. She listens to 80s music. She loves her job. She's been to Europe. She's short. She drives a SUV that I think is purple but she says is blue. She likes fruit. She likes to read. She grew up in the 80s. She's good with computers. I go on walks through Fredericksburg. She has one sister. She likes to cook.

I am not rich. I don't know any rich people. I wouldn't mind being rich. Rich people can do whatever they want nowadays. A lot of people in congress are rich. I think growing up with a lot of money doesn't build character. I've heard of people with a lot of money getting away with crimes. Society revolves around money nowadays. I've never had an allowance. I'd like to have $5,000 before I graduate. My parents grew up with little money. If I'm ever rich, I would save it. I wouldn't spend it on unneeded luxuries. I grew up thinking that I was poor. I don't like receiving money from family. I'm good at budgeting. I'm going to try and spend very little once I get out of college. If I'm ever rich I'd invest it in a house.
