Slide Notes

Many elementary grade students are facing obstacles in their successful learning because schools are over crowded and teachers don't have the time to "meet the individual needs of the child" in the moment. Small classes and experienced teachers can turn this environmental miscue into a meaningful experience.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

I AM FEELING LEFT OUT

THE TEACHER DOESN'T SEEM TO KNOW THE REAL ME
Many elementary grade students are facing obstacles in their successful learning because schools are over crowded and teachers don't have the time to "meet the individual needs of the child" in the moment. Small classes and experienced teachers can turn this environmental miscue into a meaningful experience.

WHAT IS SCHOOL REALLY FOR?

MY NEEDS ARE IMPORTANT
When a child's needs are met in the moment on a daily basis, that child senses belonging and is empowered to "fit in".

I NEED TO LEARN HOW I LEARN BEST

DO I SEE, LISTEN OR TOUCH WHEN I LEARN?
To meet the individual learning styles that children exhibit, teachers need to learn how the child learns best: visual, auditory, kinesthetic or a combination. Once the learning style is addressed, the student begins the journey to feel confident and can become intrinsically motivated to learn.

I LEARNED THAT I AM SMART

I KNOW I LEARN IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS
All children are intelligent. It is our job as educators to find out what areas are strengths and what areas need intervention.

I FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF

NOBODY TELLS ME I AM WRONG, THEY HELP ME GET TO RIGHT
When a child feels good about her/himself, a teacher can open the door to discovery holding the hand of an excited learner.

I LEARN TO SELF-ADVOCATE

I AM NOT AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS
When a child learns to self-advocate, she/he learns that it can be used as a great tool to expand their universe of learning. No question should ever go unanswered. Questioning is the key to understanding and abstract thinking.

I LEARN TO CONTROL MY IMPULSE

I CAN ASK TO TAKE A BREAK AT ANYTIME
Another form of self-advocacy is knowing when one is not in control of oneself. This is the moment when a student needs to ask the teacher if they can "take a break". A student who can self-advocate when this occurs learns to self-monitor impulsivity.

SOMETIMES I NEED HELP

IF I NEED HELP, I ASK.....SIMPLE ISN'T IT
Many students either are afraid to ask questions or just don't get called on by the teacher. Tenacity, once developed by a child, can lead to knowing when and how to ask for help and feeling good about doing so.

I AM SELF-CONFIDENT

I FEEL I CAN STAND TALL AND DO ANYTHING
Self-confidence breeds exploration and success. The teacher can "can take the student wherever she/he wants to go", mirroring trust and partnership in learning.

I KNOW I AM CREATIVE

JUST LET ME SHOW YOU
All children are creative. It is the duty of the teacher to discover each child's passion for creativity.

I GO TO SCHOOL TO LEARN

I JUST LEARN IN MY OWN UNIQUE WAY
All people have unique styles of learning. Some are more pronounced than others, but knowing how one learns enables one to compensate and succeed.
