UGLI FRUIT

BACKGROUND

  • Grows on trees in Jamaica usually in clusters of 6-12.
  • Cross between grapefruit, orange, and tangerine.
  • Easy to peel, separate into sections and slightly sweeter than grapefruit.

HISTORY

  • 80 years ago it was discovered growing wild by F.G. Sharp.
  • Ugli™ fruit was developed commercially by the same family which discovered the original tree.

NUTRITIONAL FACTS

  • The ugli fruit is high in vitamin C.
  • Contains 2 grams of dietary fiber.
  • A serving of ugli fruit supplies 2 percent of the 1,000 milligrams of calcium you need each day for strong bones and teeth.
  • The juice and fruit can be used to replace an orange.

PURCHASING AND STORAGE

  • Most plentiful during the months of November to May.
  • It is available in leading chain stores or supermarkets.
  • When buying make sure the trade mark UGLI® clearly printed on it. This will assure you that you are buying the best quality and taste.
  • Store the fruit at room temperature for 5 days or in refrigerator for 2 weeks.

People instructed by their doctors to stay away from grapefruit because of interactions with certain medicines use ugli fruit instead, because has not been found to contain furanocoumarins.
