ZEN BUDDHISM

ORGINS OF ZEN BUDDIHISM

  • Formed in 650 C.E
  • Has 10,000,000 followers
  • Arrived in Japan in the tenth century
  • Origin: meditation
  • Zen forms practice for many arts eg painting calligraphy and so on
  • Zen was popular amount samurai for discipline and self control

GODS

  • The Zen Buddhists don't believe in god
  • The Buddha was for teaching purposes
  • Buddha was a teacher that taught people the four nobel truths
  • Buddha isn't a god

BELIEFS

  • Zen Buddhists believe that all life and existence is based on a kind of dynamic emptiness of a void.
  • The word "zen" is the Japanese way of pronouncing the Chinese word "chan" which means emptiness or void.
  • Zen Buddhists attempt to understand the meaning of life, without being misled by logical thought or language.
  • Some people often explain Zen Buddhism as being paradoxical because it requires intense discipline and if that is practised properly

PLACES OF WORSHIP

  • The Buddhist worship in groups that can vary 10-100 people in a temple
  • But the daily practice would be at their home
  • The room would contain a shrine, incense, candles and a statue or image of Buddha
  • The buddhist would chant one of teh many buddhist chants

RULES

  • There are five rules in Zen Buddhism
  • They were not allowed to be violent nor kill
  • They had to respect the property of other the could not steal
  • They had to vow to exercise and take care Of Their mind And body
  • They had to be conscious in relationships

  • Meditation

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO BUDDHISMS

  • Buddhism was found in India while Zen was found in China
  • Buddhism was found by Gautama Buddha and zen was found by those who broke away from buddhism
