BRIEF HISTORY

  • Settled by Austronesians
  • The chain of 80 Melanesian islands had suffered much from conflicting interests
  • Region: From 1985 to 1994, Vanuatu was divided into eleven island regions
  • Early 17th century Spanish, French, Portuguese and British explorers were followed by 19th century raiders and privateers keen to plunder the resources of the group named The New Hebrides by Captain James Cook.

CULTURE

  • Local language is Bislama
  • Generally, women have less control of land and other property, are less mobile, and have less of a say in marriage
  • Christian (84%), Other (16%)

ECONOMY

  • Vanuatu's economy is primarily agricultural
  • Currency: Vanuatu vatu
  • GDP per capita: 3,276.73 USD
  • Movement: The top three exports of Vanuatu are Non-fillet Frozen Fish, Rice, and Cold-Rolled Iron

Vanuatu contains some of the few nearly permanent lava lakes of the world, here are active submarine volcanoes, unusual lakes in volcanic craters, unique biotopes created by the volcanic acid rain

GOVERNMENT

  • Republic - parliamentary democracy
  • Former government: Condominium , governed jointly by France and Britain
  • Legal system: Combined common law system , incorporating British, French and customary law. Constitution is the supreme law.
  • Former system : British law, French law and Joint Regulations
