  • His parents were John shakespeare, who was a leather merchant. and Mary Arden who was a local handed heires.

Life continue

  • Wife- Anne Hathaway
  • Historians think that Anne and Shakespear were not close or she had fallen out of favor because he called her his "second-best-bed." The second-best-bed were for household masters and mistresses, while the first-bed was the best. In his will little seems to have gone to Anne

  • Hamnet died at age 11 for unknown casues.

London Years & Lost Years

  • He arrived in London in mid-to late 1502, & may have found work as a horse attendant at some of Londons finer theaters.
  • Lost Years- There are 7 years of Williams life where no records exist. One theory is he might have been working as an assistant schoolmaster in lanchire. Another theory is he might have gone into hiding for poaching a game from the local landlord.

Arguments of his Work

  • Anyone of such modest education could not write with the intellectual perceptiveness and poetic power in his words.
  • Dearth of comtemporary primary sources and sketchihy details of shakespeare's life
  • No literary training.
  • These were reasons why many thought Shakespeare works were not his own.

Some think he died on his birthday April 23, 1616, while others think it is a myth. Church records show he was interred at Trinity church, April 5, 1616.

"Good friend for Jesus sake forbear
Today the dust enclosed here!
Blessed be the man that spares these stones
And cursed be he that moves my bones"

Theater Years

  • William shakespeare wrote 37 plays.
  • Three types of play he wrote was comedies; "A Midsummer Nights Dream", histories; "Henry V.", and tragedies; "Hamlet".
  • The theater he built was called the globe theater. The shape was round, natural lighting was used, Hercules bearing the globe on his shoulders with the motto was the crest, which was above the main entrance.
  • There was no seats, everyone stood.

Theater continue...

  • The theater could seat 3000 people.
  • Before entering the theater Elizabethans could enjoy bear-baiting and cockfighting.
  • The Globe Theater was burnt down when a cannon shot during a performance of Henry VIII ignited the thatched roof of the Gallary.

Shakespeare acting company was called Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1590 but in 1603 it was changed to King's Men.

Queen Elizabeth is the long-ruling queen of England. She was a princess but declared ruler through machinations. She ruled for 44 years. The Globe Theater was built by Elizabeth's permission. She also supported him since she loved plays.

Elizabethan England

  • Poverty- Population rose from 3 million to 4 million. Prices rose because Henry VIII reduced the proportion of gold and silver
  • Women were expected to marry and produce children- preferably male. Women did not go to school so had to have good house keeping skills.
  • Men- Made the decions, supported the family and improved the positions of all memeners of the family.

Crime and Punishment

  • The death penalty was not an issue. Beheading were considered the least brutal of execution methods and were according to important state prisoners or people of noble birth.
  • Being hung was the most dreadful; it was met for the most hated prisoners- those who were charged with treason

Crime cont..

  • Tortures were used to get confessions for a crime. Examples of torture is the rock the collar, iron maiden.
  • Thieves were usually whipped.
  • If someone is even accused of doing a crime it could still result in torture.

Iron Maiden

Entertainment, Sports, Jobs

  • Entertainment- Plays, going to theaters, dances, getting together for sing- alongs, feasting, and bear-baiting.
  • Sports- Fencing, hunting, Bat- fowling, and archery.
  • Jobs- Apothecary(a person who prepares and sells drugs), artist, astrologer, baker, barber, blacksmith, butler, carpenter, candlemaker, chancellor, clerk, chaplain ( a clergyman in charge of a chapel), and a cook.
  • Economy- The increasing population put strains on the economy. There were several harvest failures in every decade of the Queen's reign. Prices of food and clothes rose, this is called The Great Inflation. This caused starvation and many roaming vagrants looking for work.

Bubonic Plague

  • The Bubonic Plague started late in the 1340's. It lasted for 7 years and killed 25 - 75 million people.
  • The disease is caused by the bacteria Yersinera pestis. This bacteria is found on animals and is usually transmitted to humans through fleas then to rodents.
  • One can get this when a infected rodent or flea bites you and from material that has come in to contact with an infected person. ( fleas lived on black rats)
  • Many of Shakespeare actors died from the plague. The constnt outbreaks of the plague caused the theater to shut down. Shakespeare greatly feared the bubonic plague. Many people were scared to go out, resulting in less crowds of the theater.
