WHAT IS COPYRIGHT?

  • Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works.

WHY IS COPYRIGHT IMPORTANT?

  • Copyright is important to creators like writers and artists as well as those such as publishers that own rights, as it provides them with a legal right of ownership of the work that they produce.

WHAT DOES THE PUBLIC HAVE A RIGHT TO USE?

  • The public can use anything from things that are for public use and things that you have to get permission to use.

WHAT IS PUBLIC DOMAIN?

  • Public domain works are not restricted by copyright and do not require a license or fee to use. Public domain status allows the user unrestricted access and unlimited creativity!

WHAT IS FAIR USE?

  • The Copyright Act gives copyright holders the exclusive right to reproduce works for a limited time period. Fair use is a limitation on this right. Fair use allows people other than the copyright owner to copy part or, in some circumstances, all of a copyrighted work, even where the copyright holder has not given permission or objects

HOW DOES FAIR USE HELP STUDENTS?

  • Fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and ... Saying " yes" instead of "no": Fair Use Guidelines make room for students and teachers to use ... To republish or publicly perform a work does not fall under fair use.

HOW MUCH IS TO MUCH?

  • You can use 30 seconds or 1/3 of a song
  • You can use 1 paragraph in a novel
  • You can use 30 seconds of a video
  • You can use as many pictures with the permission of the photographer

WHAT IS ATTRIBUTION?

  • Right of attribution: this is the right of an author to be identified and named as the author of his/her work.
