VOCABULARY TERMS

Atoll- an island consisting of a circular coral reef surrounding a lagoon

  • Atoll- an island consisting of a circular coral reef surrounding a lagoon.

Barrier Reef- a long coral reef near and parallel to the shore

Crevices- a long narrow opening

Crustacean- any mainly aquatic arthropod usually having a segmented body and exoskeleton. Ex: crab, shrimp, lobster

Erosion- wearing away of land by water, wind, and ice

Fringing Reef- a coral reef growing outward from the shore with little or no water between it and the shore. One of the three main types of reefs.

Lagoon- a body of water cut off from a larger body by a reef of sand or coral.

Polyps- a small sea animal such as a coral that has a body shaped like a tube.

Runoff- water from rain or snow that flows off from the land in streams

Tentacles- one of the long, flexible arms of an animal (ex: octopus) that are used for grabbing things and moving
