Biography

  • Born 1765 in Westboro, MA
  • Died 1825
  • Got educated at Yale
  • Invented cotton gin in 1789

Early Life

  • Grew up on a farm
  • Grew up in the time of the Revultionary War
  • Was an expert at making nails as a child

  • Married Henriette Edwards in 1817
  • Had multiple children
  • His son, Eli Whitney Jr., continued his father's work

COTTON GIN

PURPOSE

  • Makes cleaning cotton 50 times more efficient
  • Only needed a few men to opporate

PATENT

  • Granted on March 14 1794
  • Many people created their own pirated version of cotton gin
  • This caused Whitney's profits to drop

IMPACT

  • Caused a massive increase in cotton production in US
  • Number of slaves grew due to higher production of cotton
  • Southern states provided more than 2/3 of the cotton in US
