COTTONMOUTH

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Cottonmouths are about 2 of 4 feet long
  • It has elliptical-shaped pupils. It has heat-sensing pit-like organs
  • It weighs 3 to 4 pounds
  • It has a fork-shaped tongue
  • In the front of its mouth,it has hollow fangs.

COLORS AND PATTERNS

  • Dark black or olive colored back and a pale belly.
  • Adult Cottonmouths may retain some patterning
  • It's snout is always pale

DIET

  • They eat both warm and cold-blooded prey.
  • Cottonmouths eat dead rodents.
  • They also eat small animals such as frogs,rabbits ect.

HOW IT KILLS

  • The cottonmouth tracks it by scent.
  • It touches it with its tongue to make sure the prey is dead.
  • It swallows the prey headfirst.
  • The cottonmouth takes its time when feeding

CAUSES OF A BITE

  • The venom breaks down and destroys blood cells
  • It breaks down other tissues and reduces the ability of blood to clot

LIVE YOUNG OR EGGS?

  • The female produces a little of up to 12 living young

  • The cottonmouth smells like cucumber
  • It opens its mouth to show caution
  • They make a rattlesnake like sound
  • Habitat regions:temperate;terrestrial;freshwater
  • Range lifespan:wild 24.5 (high) years
