THE COUNCIL OF FLORENCE

SETTING

  • The Council of Florence began in 1431 in Basel, Switzerland
  • The Council, then, transferred to Ferrara in 1438 by Eugene IV and became known as the Council of Ferrara
  • Finally, in 1439, it moved to Florence due to plagues in Ferrara where it finally became known as the Council of Florence

Why
-The Council of Florence was formed because of a schism between the Eastern Orthodox and the Western Churches
-It was held to reunite the Churches
-The Churches split because of different ideas for the role of the Pope and the changing of the creed

Important People
-Pope Martin V started the Council in Basel, Switzerland
-Pope Eugene IV moved it from Basel to Ferrara
-The powerful Byzantine Emperor, John VIII Palaeologus attended the Council along with many other minor but powerful religious figures

OUTCOME

  • The Council never really helped heal from the schism completely
  • However, their is a significant amount of less hated between the two churches
