Countdown to IRLA

The 4, 3, 2 , 1 of IRLA at Watergrass

  • Independent
  • Reading
  • Level
  • Assessment
IRLA is an instructional framework focused around student placement in a "color" reading level. Every grade level has a required level (or set of levels). The levels are built around grade level standards in reading fluency, comprehension and foundational skills. Foundational skills=phonics.

Data is collected on students reading proficiency on a website called School Pace.

The link below is a collection of resources for levels Yellow through Orange.

Must Haves
1. Independent reading for 30 minutes a day.
2. Conferencing
3. POWER Goals

IRLA can only work with these 3 structures in place.

Independent reading is invaluable for our readers. This is their time to create their identities as readers, build stamina and practice their power goals. Daily practice is celebrated and honored in every classroom.

Conferencing is when the teacher reads with a student. It can be 5-10 minutes long, depending on the purpose of the conference. All observation, reflection and student work is documented in School Pace as "EVIDENCE". Administration and SLT monitors this often.

Power Goals are specific skills assigned to readers. The students' progress towards their goal is documented in School Pace. Power Goals=Points!

*Monthly Growth Targets
*Grade/Class Profeciency

A monthly target goal is in place for every student. It is .10 points per month.

The point is added on the 15th of every month.

As a school, we are beginning to look beyond just the color level. Teachers are working on assigning Power Goals and awarding points so students show growth month-to-month.

Data can be collected by individual teacher, grade level and school-wide proficiency.

Our goal is to match or exceed the district guidelines for grade level proficiency.

Level Checks

Level checks are performed every quarter. The level check team is made up of teachers and administration.

The purpose of level checks is to "spot check" the accuracy of student placement in levels and to checks students knowledge of their power goals.

We level check 5 students randomly chosen from the levels within the class.

Data is collected and shared with the district and regional leaders and shared with individual teachers and grade level teams.

The goal is 100% accuracy. If a teacher has anything below 70%, the whole class will be checked for accuracy.
