Covalent Bonds #15

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Form between two atoms of non metals.
The two atoms share electrons.
Held together by the force of the attraction of each atom's nucleus for the shared electrons.

Single bond shares1pair of electrons.
Double bond shares 2 pairs of electrons.
Triple bond shares 3 pairs of electrons.

Covalent compounds

  • Form between non metals
  • Have lower melting and boiling points.
  • Do not conduct electricity.
  • Strongest bonds

Nonpolar bonds

Electrons are shared equally.

Polar bonds
Some elements pull more strongly on shared electrons. Causes bond to have a slight electrical charge.

Polar attracted to polar.
Nonpolar attracted to nonpolar.
Polar and nonpolar do not attract.
