IT BEGINS...

• Sept 1836 Sam Houston elected first president of Texas
• Texans approved Constitution of 1836
• Texans wanted to join the United States

THE MEETING...

• President Houston and Texas Congress have a meeting
• The meeting in 1836 was to organize the new government

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN

• Stephen F Austin appointed Secretary of State
• Austin known as "Father of Texas"
• Austin died Dec 27, 1836.
• City in Texas will be named after Austin
• (In 1839 Austin will later become permanent capital of Texas)

DECESIONS....

• Dec 1836 Congress makes city called Houston temporary capital
• Army commander; felix Huston wants to invade Mexico
• President Houston against invasion
• He thought it was too expensive

ANNEXATION

• Texans wanted to join the U.S. For protection
• Joining U.S. Called "annexation"

U.S. HAS WORRIES..

• U.S. Government did not want to join (annex) with Texas for 2 reasons:
• 1st: U.S. Worried it would ruin relationships with Mexico
• 2nd: U.S. Was mostly against slavery,, and Texas wanted slavery.

TEXAS MAKES IT!

• U.S. Recognizes Texas as a Nation
• Yay!!!
