Video Resumes

  • Typically 60 seconds
  • Opportunity to highlight & showcase your skills
  • See & hear your communication skills, charisma, and personality

Enhancement

to the traditional resume
A video resume offers the opportunity to build, explain, and showcase the skills you've listed on your paper resume. It should not be a duplicate of the traditional resume.

The Right Fit

Video resumes offer you the opportunity to speak in your own words other than the traditional resume. Employers are looking for the "right fit" in terms of their mission, values and attitudes. Here's your chance to show them!

Do

Highlight your accomplishments
Video resumes can further explain your knowledge or elaborate on a project you excelled on.

Don't

Duplicate
Don't waste your valuable 60 seconds by duplicating your traditional resume. Employers have a copy of it to read. Use the opportunity to tell employers about your strengths and elaborate on what you've learned as a college graduate or in your work place.

Do

Practice!
Write a script for your video resume. Rehearse it before you record it. Edit and re-edit if necessary.
Make sure to sound natural and comfortable.
Think about your backgrounds, ambient sounds and make sure they are not distracting. You are the star of this show! Share with family, friends, faculty to get critique before you share it with employers.

Voice overs

You can record video and audio with your iPhone or other mobile devices but make sure you are using a microphone to cut distracting ambient sound and to get the cleanest recorded voice over. You can check out a clip mic from me. Make sure to switch your phones to airplane mode to cut out notifications and other distracting sounds while recording.

You may want to hire or seek assistance from someone who has experience working with video and audio equipment if you want to create a video resume with lots of action. A boom microphone or wireless lavaliere microphone will be needed if you are recording yourself in scenes that you'll be speaking in. A storyboard is helpful if you have multiple scenes to record.
