Brief Description of Creative Commons

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Creative Commons

Creative Commons

  • Allows people to protect their intellectual property without as much restriction as a copyright
  • Allows people to share their material with others across the globe
  • Works for all types of work including text, pictures, and music

How it Works

  • Original owner decides who and how the material can be used
  • Creative Commons creates a copyright to be used so other people know the rules of the material
  • Creative Commons has search engines available to find material that can be used

How Creative Commons Compares to Copyright

  • Creative Commons is not nearly as restrictive
  • Under a normal copyright, permission must be asked for each use. Not true for Creative Commons
  • Takes the guessing game out of Fair Use since the owner can explicitly state the uses of the material
